Late last year SeaGrow Konomie Island project took out the Reef Champion Awards- Reef Community Champion for our partnership project, CQ Seagrass Regeneration. Thanks to the Keppel Island Environmental Education Centre and all our partner organisations for their continual hard work in this project, helping to heal Woppaburra Sea Country.

The Reef Champion Awards are a celebration of the outstanding achievements of individuals and organisations working to improve the quality of water entering the iconic Great Barrier Reef. The Awards are managed by the Queensland Farmers’ Federation with support from the Australian and Queensland governments to recognise the dedicated land managers, Traditional Owners, extension officers, industries and members of the community excelling in their efforts to help safeguard the future of the Reef.

The building of the seagrass education nursery facility (SeaGrow Konomie Island) has three main objectives: Providing an education resource to community and schools visiting the centre, to learn about this important habitat and the conditions required for the plants to grow and thrive; develop training programs for Traditional Owners in seagrass restoration and mariculture (Microcredentials and Vocational Training); increase research on the seagrass populations around the islands, understanding their ecology to be able to undertake restoration were needed.
